Our job as humans is not to taste the different flavours of creativity, but to find our own unique flavour.
For some, their unique flavour is design. For others, it’s poetry. You can’t afford to be a creative jack of all trades. You’ll burn out.
This doesn’t mean that everyone is restricted to one specific flavour. After all, you can have both vanilla and chocolate flavours on one ice cream cone…and it tastes delicious.
One of the reasons why some of us can’t seem to excel is any particular creative activity is probably because we’ve brought in an alien flavour into the mix. It just spoils the bunch and makes you frustrated. Add banana flavour to my vanilla ice cream and you’ve just damaged my taste buds.
Some people can write poetry and draw. Great! For others, it’s a sexy combo of design and music. Sweet! But just because it looks good doesn’t mean I have to add it.
Your job is to find your flavour(s) and become comfortable in it (them). That’s basically the only way you’ll achieve purpose in life. You can’t force yourself to like a particular flavour just because it looks nice and everyone is digging it.
So if your creative flavour is solely poetry, stick to it. If it’s voice artistry, be the best in that. If it’s a combo, thumbs up to you.
For example, Bezaleel’s creative flavour was furniture making (the book of Exodus 31). Perhaps if he decided to go for music like David, his name wouldn’t appear in the Bible.
How do you know your flavour, especially if you presently have no clue? Simple, taste them, one after the other. And as you taste, pray. A taste will convince you on whether or not you should continue or move on.
If you have kids, help them do the tasting early by allowing them try different things. That way, they’ll be sure of their unique flavours early in life.
As humans we can succeed in anything we set out to do. But the question is, are you doing the right thing?
This is a sequel to my previous post on creativity.
