As the starting pistol goes off in the air, the race track comes into full view and you feel energy rush from the earth into your feet.
And then your legs.
Suddenly all your muscles tighten, getting ready to launch forward. Your arms respond in like manner, giving your body just the forward thrust it needs to take the next step.
And then the next step.
Before you know it, you’re halfway down the track with no will of your own to stop. The engines have already been set in motion, so there’s no turning back.
Pause.
Perhaps you’re not an athlete, but you must have run a few races with friends those years when responsibility meant nothing to you.
There’s always a force required to get started. Starting something, whether it’s a project, business, relationship, job, and so on, isn’t exactly the easiest thing in life.
That’s why I don’t exactly blame people who move around like slugs, hoping that this cup will pass over.
The only reason why it’s so hard to start new things is probably because you’ve not really started many new things in your life before.
I said that because every new journey you start makes it easier to start the next one. And then the next, until you realize how easy it is for you to start without even thinking.
On the other hand, if it’s so hard for you to start that new project on your mind, then perhaps it’s one of two things:
1. The prize at the finish line isn’t something you’re interested in.
2. You don’t know how to run the race.
To the first, I’d say don’t start yet. Decide on a prize you’re willing to die for, and then get started.
To the second I’d say, get someone to show you how. Every professional athlete has a coach. Get yours if you’re really serious about running that race.
