A man with raw talent and no skill has nothing to brag about. Why?
Because everyone has raw talent.
T’was raw talent and zero skill that got Joseph into trouble in the first place. The young lad didn’t understand how to manage people. He didn’t think psychology was important. He didn’t understand timing, when to talk and when to shut up. He didn’t know how to package his presentation.
So he had to learn all that in Egypt. While interpretation of dreams would open doors for Joseph, he didn’t have what was needed to sustain the open door.
And being that God knew where he was going, Joseph needed more than just the ability to talk.
By the time Joseph’s ability was tested again in front of Pharaoh, he had also learned all the management skills needed to provide top-notch management advice like a consultant (Genesis 41:33-39). No one asked him for his opinion. He didn’t wait for the permission either. He gave it anyway.
He didn’t just interpret. He added something else and provided an end-to-end solution, saving Pharaoh the stress of figuring out the rest.
Joseph knew that Egypt was a powerhouse. All he did was connect his interpretation to that ultimate goal. He eventually got the full contract (Genesis 41:41).
If all you do is provide your talent and let the client or your boss figure out the rest without giving your own extra 2 cents (transforming what you just provided into a solution that would help the company achieve one or more of their goals), you’re only scratching the surface of your earning potential.
